Roost — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 8 June 2026
Roost is built to keep your home's information yours. We do not collect, store, sell, or share your personal data. There are no accounts, no ads, no analytics, and no tracking.
The short version
Everything you put into Roost — your appliances, maintenance schedules, pantry items, photos, and documents — stays on your device and, if you use iCloud, in your own private iCloud storage. The developer of Roost cannot see any of it.
What we collect
Nothing. Roost does not collect personal information. In App Store terms, our privacy label is “Data Not Collected.” We do not operate any server that receives your data.
Where your data lives
- On your device. Your Roost data is stored locally on your iPhone.
- In your private iCloud (optional). If you are signed in to iCloud, Roost syncs your data across your devices using Apple's CloudKit private database. This storage belongs to your Apple account; it is managed by Apple, and the developer has no access to its contents.
On-device intelligence
Roost's recipe suggestions (“Use It Up”) run entirely on your device using Apple's on-device models. Your pantry contents are not sent anywhere to generate suggestions.
Barcode lookups (Open Food Facts)
When you scan a product barcode, Roost looks it up using the Open Food Facts database. Only the scanned barcode number and a generic app identifier (for example Roost/1.0 (com.defrust.roost)) are sent. No personal information, account, or device identifier is included. See the Open Food Facts privacy policy for how they handle requests. Product information you choose to save is stored only in your own Roost data.
Camera and photos
Roost uses the camera only when you scan a barcode or a model number, and it reads photos only when you choose to attach one to an item. This processing happens on your device. Camera frames and photos are not transmitted to the developer or any third party.
No tracking, ads, or third-party analytics
Roost contains no advertising, no third-party analytics or tracking SDKs, no device fingerprinting, and no bank or financial-account connections. We do not build a profile of you and do not share information with advertisers or data brokers.
Children's privacy
Roost is rated 4+ and is safe for all ages. Because Roost collects no personal information from anyone, it collects none from children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we will update the date at the top of this page. Material changes will be reflected here before they take effect.
